A virtual Show is an IPHDA competition held online
How can PHD Events be judged fairly off of the internet
with Exhibitors from many different locations?
An IPHDA judge is required to Evaluate whether a horse willingly followed the rider’s guiding and transition cues.
They are not required to Judge how willing or unwillingly the horse reacted
to the rider’s cues.
IPHDA Judges use their expertise as successful horse trainers to give each exhibitor a score based on their ability to perform the basic's required in the specific level.
The IPHDA judging system uses a:
- -1/2 if the judge feels improvement is needed
-
0 if the judge feels that the maneuver was performed with satisfactory knowledge of the basics required at the level
-
+1/2 if the judge feels that the maneuver was performed with a very good knowledge of the basics required at the level
This judging system allows IPHDA competitions
to be accurately evaluated off of video for the following reason:
- The PHD judge does not need to see all of the fine details that need to be considered when judging other equine events where the score is based on degree’s of good and bad.
- This allows the Exhibitors to enter from many different environments that effect traditional equine competitions.
- I.e. –Size of arena –Type of footing –Weather condition –Etc.

What you need to enter:
Arena:
- A rectangle area at least 50' x 100' and no larger than 150' x 300' with suitable footing for the level of test you are riding
- The larger your arena the more time the rider has but all IPHDA patterns can be performed in a 50' x 100' arena.
- Footing for the lower levels need only be safe to walk trot and lope on
- footing for the upper levels should supply traction and give for the higher difficulty transitions
- Split the arena into 4 parts using 6 markers
- Place 2 markers in the middle (Middle Markers), 1 on either side of the arena.
- Place 2 markers each side of the middle markers, (end Markers)
- space the end markers a distance from the middle marker approximately 1/5 the total length of your arena
- I.e. if your arena is 150' long each of the end markers would be 30' from the middle marker
Example arena layout
Note: Circles are NOT required to be ridden between the middle and end markers. The center marker is the only marker referred to in required circles. The end markers are guides for pattern transitions. Setting the end markers based on a circle will result in not enough room past the end markers for proper transition and guiding requirements.
Video requirements
- A digital video Camera and operator
- A tripod is recommended for a steadier video
- Video tape from a location suitable for judging. Recommendation: near the left hand center marker is usually the best. if this is not possible somewhere on the long sides of the arena will work. The judge needs to have at least a partial profile view of the rider during straight lines.
- Make the horse and rider large enough in the view finder for proper judging. (more than 50% of the screen is recommended)To large is usually better than to small
- Video taping inside during the day time can be a challenge ( gets Dark), using the zoom and getting closer to the rider can make the video lighter, using manual lens settings can also help
- The quality of the video tape is the
responsibility of the exhibitor. IPHDA judges will mark all
submissions, however, the better quality videos, will allow for a
better assessment of your ride. to be fair to all other exhibitors when the judge can not see enough to make a proper evaluation they will mark improvement needed.
General Rules
- Videos must NOT be edited,
- There must be no stoppages in filming during the ride.
- The judges have sole discretion to decide if the ride is presented in its entirety any video judged to not show the entire ride will be disqualified.
